Armstrong definitely got it right.

I'm biased. I'm probably THE target audience for this book, or pretty close. But, wow. I loved the characters here... they're like people you'd run into in real life, with thier own little problems and quirks. Although there is an element of crime, it's not played up, and never really has a satisfying ending. Pretty much like real life. The main focus of the book is on the characters' relationships and interactions. When I read a book, sometimes I'll come across a passage or even a single sentence that'll make me stop and say, "Wow, I never thought of it that way, but that is so true!". I consider it a good thing if I see two or three of those in a book. This one had tons of them. Armstrong captures small-town and farm life perfectly, and her characters reminded me of people I know in West Virginia. (I know the book is set in Canada, but the similarities were downright eerie.) There are a few small flaws (Becky never seemed fully developed to me), but the book is well worth the price.
