Great book!

I love this book because it is small and very easy to use. The book has the picture of the leaf, bark, flowers and it's fruit. Very good book if you live in Ohio.

Living With Ohio Trees

We purchased a 22 acre plot and are building a home. We have this awesome woods with so many trees that I am unfamiliar with so bought a copy of Trees Of Ohio Field Guide. I love the book it has pictures of the trees, explains about each tree, bark texture and color, leaf type and color, size of the tree, where it grows and so much more. It is the most complete and precise guide to tree watching I have ever seen. I feel I can walk through my woods and call the trees by their first names. Great book for a beginner in tree watching! Descent field ID and it fits in your back pocket!

I have almost broke the entire spine from use, and this is definitely one of the best small pocket field ID guides I've ever had for Ohio flora. While there are definitely problems with it (lack of details, diversity of species) it is one I would recommend any serious outdoor person check out. I always keep it in my hiking pack along with the Woods Plants and Shrubs of SE Ohio and Lucy Braun's Ohio plant book. Whenever I do timber sale monitoring or nature studies it is a helpful guide and will withstand some pretty heavy use/wear/tear and still work. The glossy images are a real treat (but not enviro friendly :( Compared to crummy line drawings from 1950-70 in a lot of outdoor books, this is a nice change. Also, it is a good non-specialist book for general outdoor enthusiasts. You don't need a PhD in plant ecology or forestry to get useful uinfo fast. It also has an interesting page categorization scheme by tree shape.

useful and informative

This book nicely covers the common trees of Ohio- one page on size, habitat, etc- both native species and introduced ones. Some of the photo illustration of the various tree for leaf identifcation are not the best- he tried to take photos of leaves on the tree, which can be hard to make out. Might have been better as an isolated leaf on a plain backgound.

Regional or state tree guides is always a plus if you are like most people that just wants to identify the trees that are growing around their city, or the county they live in. This book has full page color photos of each tree's leaves, in a little square insert there is an additional picture or pictures of bark and usually their fruits and or flowers at the bottom of the full page photo. Has a small two story house drawing with the tree next to it to give you an idea how big the tree can grow. Gives distribution by region in the state not county. Tells whether the tree is native or not and habitat it grows in. Tells of interesting notes about the trees. However there is one mistake on page 202, the photo of the Red Hickory {Carya Glabra} is really a Bitternut {Carya Cordiformis} which is pictured and described on 200 and 201. There is only one hickory native to ohio that has yellow buds, and nuts that has four ridges on the green husk or outer covering of the nut. But this still is a good book. Just use the descriptions to identify trees, and also other books like the Audubon gives good pictures as well as the internet.
