Another Good DK Book for Practicing Reading - a review of "The Best Pet Yet"

"Today is a great day for Jay. Today he gets his first pet." But what will that pet be? Jay considers a puppy - but mom says a puppy will probably be too noisy. A kitten? No, dad is allergic. Bird? No, the bird belongs to the pet shop owner and isn't for sale. So what? It's fish that get nixed by Jay. You can't hug fish, nor teach them tricks. So what? The Level 2 series is a photo-based series of books for children who can read with help. And I think that description is a pretty accurate. There are, on average, four lines per page with slightly smaller print than the Level 1 books. Words include, teach, tricks, today, cage, noisy, itch, white, should, choose and bunny (hint: this is the pet Jay gets). An example of text from page 23 follows so you can judge for yourself. Jay asks the pet store man for help. Does the man know which pet he should get? The man says Jay should choose. He tells Jay to pick a pet that will make him happy. Four Stars. [B+] Cute story. Photos are typical (good) ones of the Real Kids Readers series. Generally there are four sentences per page.
