You may know about creatures such as worms, moles, snakes and mice, but did you ever really stop to think about where they live? You probably have stepped on the ground over their homes and never even knew it. Many animals burrow and live underground at least part of the time. Some like the worm are there almost all of the time. Almost everyone realizes that moles and ants have homes underground, but how about chipmunks or ferrets? In this book you will be able to read and see photographs and illustrations of animals that you have walked over and never even realized it! In this book a parent, caretaker or older student can read a more detailed explanation of an animal and its home and when it is the child's turn he or she can read the other. For example, on the left-hand side of the page about cicadas there is a paragraph discussing its metamorphosis and in part says, "A periodical cicada starts as an egg. When the egg hatches into a nymph, it burrows into the soil near a tree root . . . " On the right-hand side of the page it has two short paragraphs. The last one says, "They sing cicada songs. This one can be very loud." Among the many creatures you will see and/or learn about include salamanders, cicadas, meadow moles, earthworms, ants, meerkats, black-tailed prairie dogs, groundhogs, the desert tortoise, chipmunks, badgers, armadillos, the burrowing owl, ferrets, foxes and rabbits. This is a well written and carefully researched book. The shared reading concept will allow some quality learning time between the adult and the child. This book is very colorful and has photographs and/or illustrations for each creature discussed. I liked the illustrations because the child can easily see what kind of home the animal has made underground. For example we see a cross section of an ant colony with labels naming the rooms and/or types of ants like the queen. This shared reading book is for level K-1. Do ferrets eat worms or meat? If you don't know, you might have to read this book!
The World Beneath Our Feet

As a first grade teacher, I find this book a wonderful non-fiction resource that looks closely at the world under our feet. It shares the reasons why some animals go underground. It also takes a look at many that make their homes underground. There is a combination of interesting facts accompanied by realistic illustrations and photographs that will definitely keep the readers' interest. What I love most about this book is it is designed for two readers. There are several other books like this, both fiction and non-fiction, published by Treasure Bay ([...]).
