For ages 4-8. Each of these colourfully illustrated stories tells, in only 200 words, of the wonderful way in which God has been faithful to those who trusted Him. Parents can use the stories to introduce to even the very young child these Bible heroes and the concepts of: the faithfulness of Noah; the generosity of Joseph; the perseverance of Joshua; the strength of Samson; the determination of David; the courage of Daniel; the obedience of Jonah.
"A Treasury of Old Testament Heroes" by Patricia Pingry provides simple, quick, illustrated stories of Noah, Joseph, Joshua, Samson, David, Daniel, and Jonah. The illustrations (each story illustrated by a different artist) are well done. Even though this book is about 190 pages, it takes only a short time to read the whole book. Preschool children will stay focused through a complete reading. Hard to explain concepts from these scripture stories are avoided. For instance, in the story of David and Goliath it never comes out and says that David slew or killed Goliath. It instead says "The stone struck Goliath" and it shows the giant lying on the ground. The story of Noah talks about it raining 40 days and 40 nights but does not bring up the detail that everyone except Noah and his family were drowned. Avoiding the harsher aspects of the stories may be a plus or minus depending on your viewpoint and the age of the child. I think that for preschool children it is appropriate. You will want to follow up with more detailed Old Testament stories when your child is older.
