Ever since Milton's Paradise Lost was first published in 1667, it has been an enduring classic, which has been acclaimed by thousands as a brilliant piece of literature. Not many years ago, Calvin Miller wrote a book titled A Requiem for Love, based on Milton's classic. Miller's book is one of the best books of all time and is a classic in its own right. This review is an attempt to prove this point. One of the reasons why A Requiem for Love is such a good remake of Paradise Lost is because of its literary style and wonderful poetic prose. It remains true to the old version, yet is flexible enough to use different wording and examples. All these traits make it a powerful narrative as well as a page-turner from the very start. The story begins at creation. The narrative is moving and compelling as it takes the reader through a spiral of events which eventually lead to Adam and Eve's expulsion from the garden. The book chronicles the death of innocence after man disobeyed, but also reveals God's plan to redeem the world. Though man has failed the test of obedience, God will send a Mediator to save the world, namely Christ. The epic ends looking forward to the coming Redeemer: "One day, beloved world, one day!" This book is definitely one of the best books of all time. It is a very well-rounded tale of love, sin, and redemption. It speaks of God's plan to save the world from sin and death in order to begin a new creation.

Beautiful work, great to read at bedtime

This book is very artistically written and obviously well thought out. Miller's insights into the events of Genesis are beautifully captured in almost sensuous poetry, and it really makes you think about all that lies behind other Biblical events. You should definitely read it. It would especially be nice to read with your spouse or fiancee. :)

Awesome! The most moving story of love I have ever read!

This book was recommended to me by a close friend who knows my hunger for good literature. At first I was captivated by the fact that the author took an age old story (Adam & Eve) and was able to weave a tale of unconditional love, lust, envy, hate and vulnerability. I couldn't put this one down. With every turn of the page I was more and more captivated by these characters and the turmoil that love sometimes heaps on us. I would recommend this to anyone. It still amazes me that its been 9 years since I first read this book and still find it to be in a class all its own. Very few books can compare.

An uplifting poem on Creation/Love/Worship/Temptation

A poetic retelling of Genesis 1-3. The focus is on the why of creation and relationship with God and the why of the temptation. A very thoughtful book. Some of the topics covered are: Creation, Mankinds relationship with God, aloneness (the need for a helpmate), worship "Worship is your gift to me. And Oh, most glorious is it!", Freedom and Choice, Lust and Love, Temptation. This book is a most read!This is the first book of the "Symphony Triology" As far as I can tell only one other book is written in this trilogy - "An Overture of Light".See also the Singer Trilogy.
