Charles Drew's book concerning faith, politics, and social issues is even-handed and thoughtful. This is clearly not a "Republican" or "Democrat" book. Rather, his is a self-consciously Christian and biblical approach. Since Christians in 2004 (including myself!) have trouble thinking beyond ready-made political identities, this alone makes the book a must-read.Each chapter is shaped by considering a key passage of Scripture, and questions are included at the end of each chapter to help "make it personal." For example, the introductory chapter exegetes Psalm 97, beginning with the words, "The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad!" Here, Drew urges readers to consider whether they really find "gladness" in knowing the Lord reigns -- or are their political views shaped by fear and anxiety? He offers other insights from this psalm, including an examination of different ways people of various political persuasions make government into an "idol" (see v.7).A variety of practical considerations are discussed in this brief book, but its greatest contribution is in helping Christians sharpen their thinking in ways that apply to ANY political topic. You will benefit from this thoughtful book. Highly recommended!
