An Emotional Rollercoaster of Biblical Proportions

First published in 1992, this book remains one of my all time FAVORITE books. I have read it several times and still thrill at the power of this true story! An Aussie mother/daughter vacation on Boracay, a remote island in the Philippines not far from the South China Sea. On the third day of their idealic sun-drenched vacation, while mum lazes away on the beach, her 22-year-old bikini-clad blond daughter wiles away the day on her tiny rented bunca, later attempting to paddle around the southern tip of the island. Unbeknownst to her at the time, she gets caught in strong ocean currents, and realizes too late, that she is unable to get back to shore. Horrified at her prospects, Michelle gives herself a 5 P.M. deadline, when, with the aid of her flippers, she intends to leave the safety of the bunca to try to swim to shore. Just as Michelle starts to jump into the water, a booming audible voice says, "DON'T LEAVE THE BOAT!" Thus begins a 72 hour odyssey of unimaginable horror and heart-stopping miracles through which this girl survives not one but two nights and three days at sea. In first moonlight, she survives a fierce hurricane that capsizes, and later breaks apart her bunca. Forced to battle pounding twelve foot high waves through the pitch black of night and the scorching heat of day, Michelle's strength ebbs quickly from lack of sleep, water and food. With nerves raw and her emotions careening wildly, Michelle continues to struggle nonstop to stay alive in an angry, shark-infested sea. Finally, adrift hundreds of miles out, she is rescued by a large fishing boat whose crew mistakes her for a mermaid. This is an action packed story from beginning to end. But ultimately, this is a LOVE story of extraordinary proportions in which the Living God communicates, comforts, and ultimately saves a young girl who learns to obey His voice and walk by "100 percent faith." As you come to understand the seeming hopelessness -- the utter futility of Michelle's situation -- you will stay with her, refusing to leave her alone and you will come away exhausted for it. You will also have a new respect and awe for the ability of the human spirit to over-ride the body's natural dynamics and limitations to create a superhuman endurance. And you will be reminded that not a single hair from your head can fall without the God of our universe taking notice.
