Sheldon Allan "Shel" Silverstein was a children's book author, poet, cartoonist, screenwriter, and singer-songwriter. Born in 1930, he grew up in Chicago and attended the University of Illinois, from which he was expelled. Silverstein later attended Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and Roosevelt University for three years until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Having begun drawing cartoons as a child, his cartoons were published in Pacific Stars & Stripes while he served in Japan and Korea. Returning to Chicago, he sold hot dogs at ballparks while creating and selling his cartoons. Playboy sent him traveling around the world beginning in 1957 to create an illustrated travel journal. He published his cartoons in several collections. Silverstein's editor encouraged him to write children's poetry, and many of his first such works appeared in Playboy. As a songwriter, Silverstein has written many successful songs, including the Grammy-Award-winning "A Boy Named Sue" recorded by Johnny Cash. Silverstein's first children's book was published in 1963, but The Giving Tree was the book that made his reputation. His illustrated poetry collections, Where the Sidewalk Ends and The Light in the Attic, were also critical successes and bestsellers. Silverstein died in 1999.
