Mary Jenkins was born in Swansea, Wales in 1944, and moved to a small town in Saskatchewan, Canada for a two-year teaching assignment after graduating from college. She met her now-husband on a blind date at the end of her first year. With their marriage, she became Mary Balogh. As a reader, she discovered the Regency novels of Georgette Heyer and they inspired her to try writing. Balogh wrote her first novel, A Masked Deception, in longhand at the kitchen table after finishing the supper dishes. She won the award as Best New Regency Writer when the book was published in 1985. Since then, she has written more than 60 novels, including many best sellers, and 30-plus novellas.
