Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1931, author Martha Grimes grew up there and spent summers in Western Maryland. She earned her B.A. and M.A. at the University of Maryland. She has taught at the University of Iowa, Frostburg State University, and Montgomery College. A confirmed Anglophile, she has named many of her bestselling detective novels after pubs and set them in England. Well known for her series featuring Inspector Richard Jury, Grimes has also written other novels set in the U.S. and England, including The End of the Pier, Belle Ruin, and Hotel Paradise. She is the recipient of the Nero Wolfe Award for The Anodyne Necklace. She lives in Bethesda, Maryland.
