By far, this is the best Slocum of the thirty or so that I've read to date. It was so engaging that I read it all in one sitting. The writing is excellent. The storyline is sharp and never drags. The characters all come to life, including of course Slocum, who is at his best, which is tough, mean, but also reflective. The dialogue is also some of the most realistic I've encountered in westerns, especially between Slocum and his buddy, Hazzard. Pages 78-79 provide good evidence of that. The lines of description throughout and the interspersed knowledge of guns, mines, and locale give evidence that the writer did his research in crafting this Slocum. Highly recommended. Best passage: Slocum had known disappointment and frustration many times in his life. Times without number the two had ridden up to him, shaken his hand and introduced themselves.
