This paper examines the history of Chinese music. The aim is, on the one hand, to gain a clearer picture of the history of Chinese music, from its known origins up to the 'golden' Tang Dynasty - which represents a cultural high point in China's cultural history - and, on the other hand, to take a closer look at the social upheaval in China prior to the Cultural Revolution. A comparison is therefore of interest, as the manner in which Chinese musical culture has developed is closely linked to the development of Western classical music in China and to modern music education in China today.
