Vivian McLane Barefoot was born in Texas in 1887. When she was in her teens, her family moved to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. She married Albert William Bell, Jr., another transplanted Texan. They raised a family of five children: three boys and two girls. Even through rough times, such as the Great Depression, 1929 to 1939, they managed. During that period they, as many other Okies, moved to California where they worked where they could. All five of the children married and had families. Two of the boys served in the Navy during World War II. The third one enlisted but due to an earlier accident, he was unable to serve. Vivian was proud of her family and her family was proud of her.
