Book Overview

This multivolume work is still proving to be as fundamental to Old Testament studies as its companion set, the Kittel-Friedrich Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, has been to New Testament... This description may be from another edition of this product.

Remarkable

The most authoritative reference book in the field. Impressive! Larger than life. An odyssey of information. Immense. In summary, reading these volumes was a remarkable learning experience.

TDOT Vol 1

I'm not a biblical scholar and I can't read Hebrew, but I have the TWOT in book form as well as in the Online Bible. The TWOT references the correct page where words are found in the TDOT and I can then track words. After looking at the first 3 volumes and working some words, I can see how the TDOT is a great counterpart to the TDNT. I recommend it for anyone wanting to learn more about the Old Testament and the Hebrew language.

Great Resouce if it's right for you

I recently inherited this whole set and am enjoying it very much. If you are an Old Testament teacher at the college or seminary level, I don't know how you'd get by without this. However, if you are a pastor, even the so-called pastor/scholar, I'm not so sure this is a great choice (unless you have lots of money and time). There are other great resources out there like 1) the 3 volume Theological Lexicon of the Old Testament, 2) the 5 volume New International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology and Exegesis, and 3) the 2 volume (now bound in a single volume) Theological Wordbook of the Bible. If you have those three sets, you wouldn't need this. This volume goes into great depth on etymology and cognates (i.e., similar words in Akkadian, Ugaritic, Arabic, etc), and there's a lot of stuff in there does not provide much insight into the word meanings of the Old Testament. Given that the most appropriate audience for this series is the OT scholar or professor, I find it very odd that they use transliteration and do not use Hebrew script except in the title heading for the words and in the Table of Contents (click the "Look Inside" button above). Despite this, I'd say if you are an OT professor or OT scholar and don't have this yet, do what you can to get this set! I love it! (Then again, I didn't have to pay for it!).
