The Ordnance Survey Explorer Map series are issued at an extremely detailed 1:25,000 scale for areas of exceptional interest, in this case the outdoor recreational opportunities of the Peak District, the UK's oldest designated national park. Two Explorer Map sheets cover nearly all the Peak District. This map sheet (OL1) covers the Dark Peak area described by Kinder Scout, Bleaklow, Black Hill and Ladybower Reservoir, among other attractions. Explorer map sheets have a multicolored presentation with a high degree of detail in the depiction of physical terrain features, contour, and physical structures. OL1 covers some exceptional possibilities for walking, hiking, trekking and just touristing in the north half of the Peak District, including a list of the most commonly used walking routes. It is also suitable for automobile navigation across the local network of roads and country lanes. OL1 is a two-sided map sheet, further dividing its coverage of the area into eastern and western portions. Explorer Maps are laminated to be weather-proof and tear resistant. This lamination also makes a rather large map sheet a bit bulky and difficult to handle or to refold. However, this and other explorer maps are very highly recommended to those travelers planning their own itineraries by foot, bike, and/or automobile across a strikingly beautiful and historic portion of England.
