The Oxford Anthology of African-American Poetry

The editors of this volume have done an exceptional job of collecting and arranging a wide variety of selections by a wide variety of African American writers. Many of the poems are some of my old favorites, and many were new to me. With even a casual glance through the book, the reader cannot miss the pain flowing through African American history, the courage of "ordinary" African Americans, and the genius of African American poets. The helpful biography section in the last pages of the book showcases the range of writers who contributed and continue to contribute to the field of African American poetry. I have waited for a volume of this sort for a long time, and I am glad to have it in hand.

Black American Culture

My students loved this book. They found it interesting and it opened their eyes. They have loved the poetry of Tupac, Maya Angelou, but this book broadened their perspectives.
