The West has been my spiritual home ever since I cut my teeth on "Rin-Tin-Tin" and "The Lone Ranger" in the 1950's, and Montana has occupied a special place in my heart ever since I discovered the paintings of Charles M. Russell and the graphic art of Stan Lynde. In this 14th volume of their Best of the West anthologies, Pronzini and Greenberg offer a selection of writers whose mastery of Montana via the written word equals the art of those two masters. Most of these writers lived in Montana for a greater or lesser part of their lives; all know the land, its history, and the people who made it. The baker's dozen of stories range from the light and delightful "The Lamb of the Flying U," a Happy Family story by B. M. Bower in which Chip and his friends welcome a new cowboy to their circle, to "Bannack Doctor" by Norman A. Fox (who also contributed "Bet the Wild Queen!"), a historical tale set during the Vigilante period in Virginia City, to T. V. Olsen's "No-Fights," in which a handicapped Sioux brave must deal with a band of Army deserters in the aftermath of Custer's Last Stand, A. B. Guithrie's "Bargain" (the story of the stormy relationship between a freighter and a German storekeeper) and Pronzini's own "All the Long Years," an O.-Henryesque sting-in-the-tail story of a rancher and a rustler. Definitely a superior entry to the series and one every Montanan--real or spiritual--should read.
