"The Majestic Crane" is the story of a young African American girl coming of age. It tells the story of a young black girl growing up in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at a time when the Civil Rights Movement was in full sway; legal segregation had only beenconstitutionally abolished about a decade earlier. During the early sixties or post 50's era when suburban life was filled with fewer complications and life was lived at a less frenetic pace. The Majestic Crane takes its name from the Japanese classic tale "The Crane Maiden" or "Crane Wife" a book the author read as a child, and it recounts Shelly's personal encounters with Asian culture spanning four decades. The book looks at multicultural relations, religion, education, friendship, travel, and the experiences of being the only African American exchange student, dorm mother, and teacher in an Asian society.
