This is a great companion book if your into biblical studies. A very good reference about the history of the bible, its origin, and how it was translated into different languages. It will give you an idea how this book greatly affected people and society. Its powerful words shaped our history, governments, and laws. A page from an old bible was included. The older the bible, the more valuable it becomes. Some people collect old bibles and even buy it in auction houses. There was one antique copy mentioned, the King James, that was auctioned at around US$300,000++.
The first English Bible
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
This is a nice little book giving us a glimpse of the men who would defy the Catholic church. And gave the laymen the chance to hear God's word uncorrupted. They gave up their lives for what they believed; as Christians it is important we know who these men were. This is the history behind our current English Bible. The preface gives a better summation: "The Forbidden Book attempts to recapture the spirit of William Tyndale, Tyndale's love for the Lord and for the Word of God focused his mind, concentration and energies and drove him to produce the English Bible for the people."......This first American writing of a study of Tyndale, The Forbidden Book, tells of all the elements that composed the makeup of William Tyndale....."William Tyndale was a martyr. He was but one in a 'sea of martyrs whose sacrifice broke the chains and let God's Word go free.....'" The prologue looks at protestantism in England and its leaders. The introduction covers the reformation and the first English translation of God's words. We begin with the mental giant, Wycliffe and his attempt to preach against the Roman Catholic church. The church in those days would "control peoples minds by controlling their education and control their education by controlling their language"----this was the Dark Ages. We then follow Colet and Erasmus as they get the scriptures into the hands of the layman. Tyndale then begins his work with the support of the "giant killer", Luther........protestant was soon coined: meaning, separate from the church of Rome. Along with these martyrs there are names we will never know, only God does. And what were their crimes: Christian obedience to God. Since 1611 the Bible has been the "best seller", "that is the legacy of one man who worked alone, exiled from his beloved England, separated from friends and family, enduring bitter cold and discomfort, living in poverty and finally imprisoned and murdered for daring to obey God rather than man". Wish you well Scott
