Thought I ordered paperback in acceptable condition, got hardcover in great condition

The book was practically taken off the shelf of a library where it was hardly touched at all, perfect condition. Will most definitely be ordering off this website exclusively from now on.

Buyer beware!

It is an abridged version and not what I wanted! I wish I had read more reviews before I ordered it!

Abridged version received

I ordered what was supposed to be an unabridged version, but I received an abridged one.

Abridged Versions

They should really make it clearer that this is abridged! The description even says it's unabridged (and then a disclaimer that this might be from another edition -- ???). The only way you'd know is if you realized the page count looked off, now need to buy another version.

Be Aware...Abridged

As others have said, I ordered this because it was unabridged and received an abridged copy. I see no way to confirm a selection of unabridged, other than to look at the covers and pick from those (and even then, I'm not sure). Will be looking elsewhere for an unabridged version.

Abridged

I ordered what I thought was unabridged but it was not. Seems to be a problem here.

Ordered VGC Hardcover. It arrived on time and in exactly the condition as advertised, but this copy is an abridged version which was not made clear at all by the listing which was very disappointing. Likely going to buy a new copy of the Penguin Classics version to actually read and this will just be decorative I guess.

Alexandre Dumas was a black man! This photo is misleading. A wonderful book though! Had to give it a 3 only because the photo is misleading.

Not the full version of book

The listing did not make it clear that it was not the full version of the book.

I did not want nor order the abridged version.

The review is for the version and edition of the book not the book itself. Maybe specify next time somewhere in the title that it is the abridged version because I thought I was ordering the unabridged edition.

Great book--mistake in order

I carefully selected an unabridged copy based on the number of pages, but I received an abridged one.

Bought in vgc but received a copy with marker marks on the edge of book and there are tear on endpapers

Worth the read

This book has 117 chapters that are each a story on its own and they are wonderfully woven together. It does take some time to read but it’s definitely worth it. Wait & hope.

Take me to the Unabridged!(James Brown Style)

Great price for a great classic, cannot wait to read it, however i found my edition to be the bland old abridged version by B&N. So check carefully at the edition details. Gotta get me that unabridged version!

Enthralling!

The Count of Monte Cristo was a fantastic read. It was enthralling, adventurous, and always kept me on my feet. I would recommend him to anyone. I loved it so much I finished it in a little under 2 days.

I think that Count is a really good book. I was hesitant to read it, at first, but once I got started, I couldn't stop. The action, once it gets started, is amazing. There's never a dull moment. Alexandre Dumas has created a wonderful picture of life in 18th century France.

Alexandre Dumas - Creative Writer or Tedious Instinct?

My AP English teacher recommended this book for me to read over the monthly required reading list, and I thought, "Oh great, what a great idea....". But it was for two months because of its length, so I took it.Each chapter includes a specific idea to the plot that keeps you wanting to read more. I would bring this book to work and read a chapter a day during my 15 minute break and would go overboard reading two chapters because it just keeps getting better and better! Each new idea came as a surprise for me, and so much is in it that I would recommend it to anyone who wants a good book.Alexandre Dumas sure knew what he was doing when he read this, so I definitely recommend this.

Count of Monte Cristo Day

If you've ever thought life was unfair, you need to read this book. Revenge has never been so complete, and the avenger even has a spiritual awakening at the end. There's sword fights for guys and fancy clothes and romances for the girls. I first read the abridged version in the 8th grade, I read the full version a year later, and I'm reading it again right now. It's really that good. Any crime-ring or revenge themed book you will ever read draws references from this Dumas classic. And hey, there's a movie now too!(p.s. this is coming from a now 18-year-old actress with a very short attention span)

The Unabridgement Is Well Worth The Time !!!

This is more of a note to compare the Oxford unabridged version to abridged versions of this story.Previously, I read an abridgement of The Count of Monte Cristo and enjoyed it thoroughly. The story is a classic Man-Done-Wrong-Wreaks-Revenge tale.Eventually, I decided to read the unabridged version, even though it is over 1,000 pages, and I'm exceedingly glad that I did!There is an incredible amount of tension in this book, which miraculously enough is retained throughout the entire work. In the unabridged version, the reader is inserted into the story in a "you are there" sense, moment by moment, which is, in my opinion, the thing that retains this tension.Not to disparage the abridgement, but - in shortening the story - the reader is sometimes not a participant in the storyline, but merely hears about the events in an off-hand summary. As a result of this, part of the soul of the book is removed.That is a shame - especially with this work - because you are partly robbed of the emotional reward of following Edmond Dantes' journal from hell along his complicated strategy to struggle toward heaven ... which is a long journey from Marseilles!You should set aside the time to read the unabridged version of this work! You will not feel the time a useless sacrifice!
