Seafarer Chumash

The Chumash, The Seafarers of the Pacific Coast is a simple introduction to this Native American tribe. The five chapters cover: who are the Chumash, the early Chumash, Change comes to the Chumash, The Chumash Today, and Preserving the Chumash Way. Page 13 talked about shaman who is the chief for the tribal affair and well-being. The rock art is a valuable legacy this tribe left to study and research on their myth, philosophy and cultural tradition. They consumed a lot of seafood, especially shell fish, clams, mussels and abalones with shell mound hills. Some shells were utilized as ornament or medium of exchange. Highly valued is their basket which can hold water. They even have woman right to be a tribal shaman chief. This simple book is a good basic orientation to this tribe for further study.
