My First Stevenson, Won't be my last!

"The Baker's Daughter" was my first D. E. Stevenson book, but it definitely won't be the last. She writes in a very simple, but old-fashioned style that I personally find both calming and enjoyable. There's not much action, but delightful characters and descriptions that are well-done (and not overly about clothes, as some newer books focus on). If you are thinking of reading a Stevenson, then I highly recommend this one!

1930s Scots Romance

Originally published in 1938, one of D. E. Stevenson's earlier novels, The Baker's Daughter is set in the imaginary village of Beilford, rural lowland Scotland, among the shopkeeping families. It provides a fascinating view into Scots culture just before WWII will change it forever. Long-held class divisions, "racial" beliefs, and social expectations give the book a depth beyond the enjoyable but predictable romance. I enjoyed this book for its setting almost entirely among ordinary working people. One of the main characters is a modern artist. As usual, the author's settings are vivid.
