This #1 New York Times bestseller and deliciously creepy horror novel has a storyline inspired by the Ripper murders and an unexpected, blood-chilling conclusion. Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life. Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her back to her own sheltered world. The story's shocking twists and turns, augmented with real, sinister period photos, will make this dazzling, #1 New York Times bestselling debut from author Kerri Maniscalco impossible to forget.
I didn't start getting into the story till about 50 pages in. I honestly had a feeling that Audrey was the killer, but as it turned out, she was helping with the investigation of the murders. What really annoyed me was that Audrey had difficulties stand up for herself. I remember that I wanted to cry because I wanted her to stand up to her cousin who roughly applied her makeup. I wanted to grab Audrey through the page and knock some sense into her and then I'd say, "You don't need to be who everyone wants you to be. If something doesn't feel right, stand up tall and speak your mind." I hoped the story got better but I was so FED UP with how women were viewed. Women aren't weak but strong, intelligent and capable of doing anything men can do. If you're sensitive to men treating women like they're weak and
brainless, don't read this book. I can only assume she's afraid to stand up for herself and since gossip is real unfortunately, I don't blame her for being wary. On another note, this book should definitely have trigger warnings. For example; I can't believe this is considered to be YA when there's talk of organs and the way people are killed.
An excellent victorian murder mystery!
