This ain't your Grandpa's Sociology book-every American should read this!

This is the first class-required text book that I have ever enjoyed reading. This book deals with just about every social issue imaginable: race, gender, deviance, culture, sex, social class, poverty, age, crime, ethnicity, conformity, social conditioning, torture, violence, social control, capitalism, and much more. It is forthright and brave and does not tiptoe around relevant issues and alarming statistics. It is very up to date with sections on controversial issues like Hurricane Katrina and Abu Ghraib. Every time I walk away from this book I do so with new, applicable knowledge that gives me a better sense of the social mechanics of the world around me, as well as the tools to become a better citizen of the World.
