Still an excellent resource after 30 years

The Southwest Parks and Monuments Association (now called the Western National Parks Association) has sixty-three locations in eleven states. Affiliated sites range from California to Kansas and Montana to southern Texas. The purpose of the Association is to support the National Park Service, and to publish books, phamphlets and other materials intended to help people enjoy the parks. It's well worth checking the wide range of products available online and at the Tuscon retail store if you are in the area. This guide is particularly useful for all of Arizona and New Mexico and the southern portions of Colorado and Utah. Many of the plants can be found north of that area, and into southern Texas. The general geographic features are slopes lying between 4,500 and 11,500 feet. One amazing fact to me: 26 to 27% of Arizona and New Mexico, 30% of Colorado and Utah, and 22% of Texas are still forested. This is a useful guide to the trees and shrubs in that vast area. The Association's publication are well tested by professional naturalists, and any guide that continues to be sold is proven to meet the test of time. In the hand the guide is very helpful for anyone hiking in the area. Robert C. Ross 2009
