L.A.mood piece

Eve Babitz evokes a feel for a certain part of L.A., a spokeswoman for her times. Raised in 50s and 60s, Hollywood High, seemed to ride tides of various in scenes, and has written about them. SEX AND RAGE seems to be a largely autobiographical novel. Jacaranda's family and raising mirros Eve's: Hollywood High; surfer girl; after high school she paints surfboards. Meets interesting folks and gets taken into scenes. Meets guys (Gilbert; Max; Shelby) and drifts along; knows she is lucky. The main scene is a Beverly Hills group which Max and Etienne center and everything is perfect. But she drinks too much. At some point she writes a story which is published and then she is picked up by a hot literary agent who pushes her to do a book, which she does, which leads to New York City. After events there,including stopping drinkin, she returns to L.A. There isn't a lot of plot; there is ambiance and an evoking of the times. L.A. and the ocean are the best places in the world. I enjoyed the book when I read it 20 years ago and enjoyed it more this time. Do not look for much sex or rage in the book. Look for a classic vision of Los Angeles
