Leonard Schwartzman, M.D., has penned a memoir that takes us from a troubled boyhood in Brooklyn to the Himalayas. Dr. Schwartzman practiced Internal Medicine from 1969 to 1994. He conducted research in cell membrane transport and clinical research in geriatrics. He served as Director of Medical Education at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and as Assistant Clinical Professor at the UCLA School of Medicine, and founded the Center for Geriatric Health and the Geriatric Day Hospital in Los Angeles. He participated in medical exchanges in Tibet with the Boulder Lhasa Sister Cities Project, and studied tai chi chuan and meditation for many years. While undergoing coronary surgery at the height of his medical career, a deep wound infection and multiple related complications led to his inability to return to practice and all but cost him his life. Later, signs of Parkinson's disease appeared and progressed. In this book he describes experiences with the doctor-patient relationship and addresses the stark end-of-life realities that are his own.
