Powerfully Truthful

Without being melodramatic or brooding, this book opened my eyes to the dehumanizing abuses of extremist Islam more than any other book I've read so far. The books written through a friend by an anonymous Saudi princess who calls herself Sultana cover the same subject clearly and through the eyes of a woman and mother, but Dr. Danialypour's work is more powerful because his story as truthful without being told through a self-absorbed and self-indulgent voice. And this is not really the story of an imprisoned princess. The smothering power of conservative, extreme Islam is no respecter of persons. Amireh, the princess, and Masoumeh, a convicted criminal and beggar, are each as imprisoned and victimized as the other despite the different economic and social classes they were born into. But the true tragedy of the story is Amireh's father. Having spent his political life campaigning for freedoms for women through education, he was the first to educate his daughter in London. But he throws away his credibility and shows his true self when he uses her as a bargaining chip by forcing her into a marriage that will bring him more political power. He throws away his integrity when he lures an innocent girl into fatal peril to save his daughter's life, and then he loses his beloved daughter, herself. He still has sons and wealth, but what does he have left that has any true value? This is what truly haunts the thoughtful reader.
