This is such a heartbreaking, tender book, the story of a family - broken, yet whole, too. I give copies to everyone I love.

My Husband and my Father have also read this book and we will never forget it. It is very moving and very disturbing at the same time. Truly wonderful.
A beautiful, gentle novel about fathers and sons

By the time I finished the first page of this book, I was captivated. Because the narrator is mentally slow, the language is very simple and clear, but also full of wonderfully childlike thoughts and insights. There is an atmosphere to this book that is impossible to describe; the best I can do is to suggest that you think back to when you were a child in the summertime, lying in your bed at night with the window open, listening to the sounds of the sleeping neighborhood and smelling the scent that is unique to summer air. You could forget about your troubles and anxieties, and simply lie there feeling strangely at peace with everything. This book concerns the at-times strained relationships between twin brothers and their father, and the hidden love that they have for each other. There are passages in this novel that are so full of beauty and truth (most especially, Johnny's thoughts while he is in the car riding home with a girl he loves) that they make you feel almost like you have had some sort of spiritual revelation. I only wish the readers had gotten to know Bobby (the wild brother) a little better, but I know that that is the way it should be: we are like the rest of his family in that way, wanting to be closer to him and continuously being kept away. This is definitely one of my most favorite books I have ever read, and I can't recommend it highly enough!
