"Our Daughters and Our Sons, are just Candles in the Sun." This is a statement that has become more and more true recently in the news and on American streets. Brown and Black youth are struggling every day to live their lives in peace without fear of getting shot down. Yet, most of us young people in this great country are asleep; we are unaware or seem to not even care that our brothers and sisters are becoming strange fruit day by day. Our people and community are hurting. It seems a black person's life is valued less than a dog. It hurts to see young boys and young men that look like you slaughtered by the many that are supposed to protect them. It's upsetting and can allow you to become pessimistic looking at life. This book of poetry encases the hopelessness and pain in the present and past much of us Black Americans feel and have felt. However, the hopefulness and optimistic future we plan to see and live in is also enclosed within. After you've read cover to cover, hopefully you can feel awakened.
