Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is defined as a qualitative developmental enamel defect that affects at least one permanent first molar, with a strong genetic component. Hypomineralization of tooth enamel was first reported in the late 1970s when several researchers described frequent congenital hypomineralization of the permanent first molars (PFMs) and incisors. Late in 2000 at the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (EAPD) Congress in Bergen, this condition was named Molar Incisor hypomineralization (MIH).
