Exhaustive in breadth, clear in detail

In this magisterial work, author Louis Untermeyer gives the reader a wonderful insight into the lives of every major author of English poetry from Geoffrey Chaucer (c.1340-1400) to Dylan Thomas (1914-1953). Arranged chronologically, each author is presented with wonderful clarity; where his or her triumphs and tragedies are all recounted briefly, but in such a way that you really get a feeling for who they were. This is a wonderful book, one that I find myself returning to over and over again over the years. I love this book, and highly recommend it to you.

Lives of the Poets by Louis Untermeyer

The concise biographies featured in this classic history of the poets lives and works are fascinating. If you have studied poetry in school or merely love poetry for its own sake, you WILL find that the short biographies in this work add insight and meaning to works of the respective poets.Do yourself a favor. Pick up a copy of this book, even though it is now out of print. It is a valuable and entertaining resource for anyone who considers himself to be "well-educated."
