This account, in both English and Spanish, of the beginnings and development of the Mennonite medical, education, and church planting work in Puerto Rico from 1943 to 1981 was written by one of the key participants. As a member of the La Plata Mennonite project from 1943 to 1946, and as director from 1948 to 1952, Justus Holsinger was ideally placed to observe conditions in Puerto Rico which he described in his 1952 book "Serving Rural Puerto Rico." Holsinger returned to Puerto Rico in 1969 on sabbatical to study the transformations that had taken place on the Island in the intervening seventeen years. His book "Puerto Rico: Island of Progress" contains his observations on the changes that had taken place in that interval. After retirement, Holsinger and his wife Salome returned to Puerto Rico as volunteers at Academia Menonita Summit Hills. This book contains his observations on the state of the Mennonite work on the Island, written in 1971 and in 1981. Together with Holsinger's two earlier publications, "La Obra Menonita en Puerto Rico, 1943-1981" provides an overview of Mennonite work in Puerto Rico over a period of nearly four decades.
