(This is the true story of two remarkable women. Nita, born during the First World War, is illegitimate. At grammar school (liceo) she meets the vivacious Yolanda from the Italian community in London. The two young women become best friends and involved in the left-wing intellectual life of the 1930s. Through their eyes, we see the often polarised Italian community in those turbulent times and its profound impact on the world of ideas and political thought.

In the meantime, Nita meets Rikh, an activist in the India League. When war is declared, they marry in haste. But Nita realises she is unhappy...)
