Joseph Martin McCabe was born on the 12th November 1867 in Macclesfield, Cheshire to a family of Irish Catholic background. At 15 he entered the Franciscan order and spent a year of preliminary study at Gorton Monastery and then a novitiate year in Killarney before Forest Gate in London for the remainder of his priestly education.
