Truly a murder of quality

Stella Rode writes to her aunt, Ailsa Brimley (Glenda Jackson), saying that her husband killed the dog and that Stella is next on his list. Stanley Rode teaches at a boys’ school. It just happens that Alisa knows George Smiley (Denholm Elliott) and asks for his help by informing him they also have a mutual acquaintance who works at the same school. After finding that the woman is already dead, George Smiley agrees to investigate the problem to satisfy Alicia Brimley’s suspicions about the husband. Naturally, when we get to the school, a lot of people look guilty; of course, they have a motive, opportunity, and sneaky looks. George Smiley helps Inspector Rigby (Matthew Scurfield) slowly unravel the truth. There are enough clues that if you want, you can figure out what happened before the final scene, where everything is explained. Unfortunately, I have not read the book yet, and we always know that the book is better than the movie; just a note, John le Carré wrote the screenplay. Other people who watched the many various movies containing the character George Smiley will tend to compare Denholm Elliott to Alec Guinness. That is not necessary, as Denholm Elliott holds his own as the Smiley character. No closed caption, but no mumbling to require it. Filmed on location at Sherborne School and in the town of Sherborne, Dorset, and at Shepperton Studios. For Thames Television. 1991.
