Kuzhali Manickaval Has Wings

The stories of "Insects Are Just Like You and Me Except Some of Them Have Wings" are like well-remembered dreams. They are frustratingly elliptical and playfully topsy-turvey in their abandonment of mundane reality, yet sufficiently vivid and subtle to provide that delicious moment of doubt about the dreaming/waking, imaginary/reportorial dichotomies which make us feel in control of our lives. This is a wonderful read!

Best new writing I've seen this year

By turns funny, surreal, philosophical and poignant, Manickavel's outstanding collection of short stories is also stunningly original. She successfully blends elements of surrealism and magic realism with a rich sense of place, and she has a true gift for writing dialogue. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
