first missionary bio book

reading this aloud to my 5yo, 3yo, and 1.5 (But for the 5yo). we've read 4-5 stories. i do one every other week and i just read a couple of pages over lunch until we finish. i've appreciated this book because it has introduced mature topics in a gentle way (war, bombing, slavery, temple worship, alcoholism, etc) YET in the context of God using his people to bring redemption. At first it felt a little dry because lots needed to be talked over, but the more stories we've read the more engaging they become. it gives an overview of a hero and then 3 parts that expound more on that hero. it has character/virtue traits to emphasize, bible passage, and questions to discuss but i usually skip those and talk just ask him what he heard and discuss. i would think 5 is the youngest to read this to (my 3 and 1.5 do not engage at all, they are just around). Great for K-3rd grade though (or older if its new info!). I've appreciated being able to introduce Christian history & what obedience to God has looked like for for some followers of Jesus. Torchlighters has 20-30min episodes on most, if not all of the people in this series but most episodes seem too mature for 5yr olds - nice to have a show to include though if its fitting for your family.

Inspiring and Good for Classroom

I'm planning to use this for my 5th grade class this year. Formerly, I use to use Jesus Freaks to share with my 5th graders the Christian martyrs that have gone before them. So far, I've read Hero Tales Vol I, and am going to use these volumes to share with them. In this volume, most of the heroes are from Europe, some from America, and one from Africa Samuel Morris. There's an interesting story that could be used to garner interest before each account is read. For example with Gladys Aylward, I'm thinking of prefacing the hero with "Today we're going to learn about the life of a missionary woman, and how God used her in China as a foot inspector, to do mighty things for His kingdom!"Definitely one of those eye-catching facts in each hero! George Muller's account is one that definitely stood out the most as this man depended on food for his orphanage solely on the benevolence of a God who answers prayer! Definitely a great book for the family or for classrooms.

Best Book of Missionary Tales

This series is the best series I have read on the topic of missionary tales. Dave and Neta Jackson have done an outstanding job of researching their topic. The stories feature lives of ordinary individuals who heard God's call on their lives and responded. You and your family will read about Gladys Aylward, William and Catherine Booth, David Livingstone and many others in this exciting series. We are using this series along with our unit study of "Galloping the Globe".

Great Family time

could be spent reading this book to each other. It is very informative and can keep the attention of any children. The stories are very inspirational.

Good Background information.

This is a good book to give an overview of several different key influencial individuals to the Christian Faith. It is written from a Protestant perspective regarding Martin Luther, William Tyndale, etc. It is probably best suited for kids age 7+ on to adults who want a quick, simplified summary of these individuals. For each person there is a summary, and then two-three 1-2 page stories regarding their lives. It also includes comprehension questions for each story which seem to help my girls solidify what they learned. Though many stories are quite interesting, some of the stories can be a bit dull to a child waiting for an exciting story. So, in order to keep my children's interest I often read it to them with animation, but I still see it as a very valuable book for us to have.

Simplifies our view of active faith through godly people

For all ages this book is inspiring. A taste of what it means to trust in the Almighty God, who always provides a way for those who follow Him and listen to their inner most heart.
