Back before his disgrace, people took Jeff Smith (the Frugal Gourmet) very seriously about a lot of things. I still do, since I'm of the opinion his sexual habits, however reprehensible, have not a bloody thing to do with his skill in the kitchen. Anyhow, the point is, Mr Smith said that he had never seen anyone more obsessed with food than the Chinese; he said that they speak of the next meal while eating the current one. I have a similar habit in that I love to read about food and cooking while eating. If you share this habit, by all means beg, borrow, or steal a copy of this book. It is THE great Western cultural survey of food and eating.
