ONE 19TH CENTURY THEOLOGICAL "GIANT" GRAPPLES WITH ANOTHER

David Friedrich Strauss (1808-1874) was a German theologian and writer, whose Life of Jesus Critically Examined (Lives of Jesus series) was one of the most important theological events of the 19th century. Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) was a German theologian and philosopher who wished to reconcile Christianity with Enlightenment thinking (see his book, On Religion; Speeches to Its Cultured Despisers). Strauss was inspired by reading the transcripts of Schleiermacher's lectures on the life of Jesus (see The Life of Jesus) to begin his researches. However, he sharply criticizes Schleiermacher: "the really positive element of the work lies only in what it advances about the person of Christ. Schleiermacher's Christology is a last attempt to make the churchly Christ acceptable to the modern world.... Whether this presupposition is tenable must show itself when the Gospel reports about Jesus are systematically subjected to examination.... Schleiermacher's Christ is as little a real man as is the Christ of the church." He concludes on the note, "Schleiermacher's ear was more sensitive; he let a part of the narrative--to be sure it was the smaller part--keep its miracles, but in turn surrendered it as unhistorical. He sought to support the greater part by extending the concept of nature and of the natural. By subtracting from the narratives what is to be subtracted and by adding to this concept what is to be added, also he believed himself able to answer the question yes. But now we have seen in a host of points that it cannot be done this way either." "As soon as we no longer expect to treat the Scriptures as other than a human book we will be able to treat them with full respect; as soon as we take courage to really put Jesus in the ranks of humanity, our reverence, or love, cannot fail." While this volume is not "essential reading" for those interested in the historical Jesus, it will nevertheless be of lasting interest to such students, as well as to those who are interested in either Schleiermacher or Strauss.
