Celia Grant, Detective and Horticulturist

Some of my favorite reading is mystery novels. I usually choose a story that has a female detective, but not always. As an older reader, I appreciated Agatha Christi, Sherlock Holmes, then P.D. James, and lately the "Murder She Wrote" series on television. English mysteries hold a special fascination, whether set in modern times or in the recent past. John Sherwood has written a series of these mystery novels. This one, "Creeping Jenny," is the ninth in his Celia Grant series. Celia is the heroine, and part time detective. The book was published in 1993, but includes details relevant in today's news. Mr. Sherwood's plot is enhanced by the use of a subplot in the story of the criminals' planned activities. The story also takes on current concerns about pollution by industry and the devious use of those engaged in "green" activities by corporate greediness. Interesting plotting throughout. I have not read the previous eight books, but did enjoy this one. I am a gardener, but without the knowledge of gardening and plants of Ms. Celia Grant. I did enjoy following her reasoning out the details of this story and its mystery. She is memorable for being very practical, and still interesting. I thought her a pleasant person, one I would like to know personally. The people (characters) in her village are also interesting, even though in real life, the police may not be quite as eager to enlist the help of an amateur detective as Author Sherwood would have us believe in this story. This story is an entertaining read for anyone who enjoys the English village type of mystery story, with all of its English color and characters. Gardeners will also love the information about plants and landscape planning. This little book is recommended for pure leisure enjoyment.
