Another Testament of Jesus Christ

"This volume is meant to be more like a meditation upon scripture than a work of scholaship. . . . From the beginning it was intended to be a study of the Book of Mormon's contributions to our understanding of Christ." I generally don't enjoy devotional books; I prefer to read scripture, honest history, or personal narrative. But Elder Holland is among the very best writers (and speakers) in the Mormon church. His style is clear and literate, with little of the bombast favored by less talented churchmen. In Christ and the New Covenant: The Messianic Message of the Book of Mormon, Elder Holland has produced a thorough and readable survey of Mormon christology as embodied by the Book of Mormon. He draws illustrations and insights from every section of the Book of Mormon. He effortlessly convinces the reader that the Book of Mormon, published before the Church was founded, teaches the complete doctrine of Christ - those aspects that are unique to Mormonism as well as the biblical doctrines that are shared by christendom.

This is a wonderful, moving, personal look at the Book of Mormon written by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland. His testimony at the end of this book is worth the purchase price alone. This is not a verse-by-verse commentary. Instead, it is a collection of personal essays that give meaningful insights into the stories and doctrines of the Book of Mormon. You can almost hear the emotion in Elder Holland's voice as you read his words. The Book of Mormon has clearly changed his life. I used "Christ and the New Covenant" a lot while teaching the Gospel Doctrine Sunday School class in my ward, and I continue to use it during my personal study time. I have given this book as a gift many times. It holds a special place on my bookshelf next to my Book of Mormon.
