This is the story of one soldier in an infantry battalion during the Great War. It is also a story of Walsall and the people of the town in this period. The Regimental War Diary of the 7th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment is at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, sunk on its way to Egypt after the battalion left the peninsular. The niece of Thomas Craddock learned his story as a young girl and told her family about it, so some of the stories are told from family legend. Through these incomplete records a story emerges of a man who not only served his time, but excelled, becoming the senior soldier, the Sergeant Major.
