By All We Hold Dear was a wonderful novel. Angeline is a young woman during the civil war period. She lives the life of a typical southern belle. She is always going to parties and tea. She has the everyday experience of plantations and slaves and being mistress of Lairdswood (her home plantation). From the opening scene to the end of the novel you see great change in her maturity. Whent the book opens she's just a young woman who doesn't really know what she wants in life but as you read, you grow to respect her, and to look up to her. She is faced with many hard situations and she overcomes them with such courage. By the end of the novel she is very wise and has learned so much from her experiences. This book follows her life through her first love, her loss, and then as she learns to love again. The losses keep you on your toes as you read, axiously waiting to see how brave Angeline will handle her trials. The love story inside the plot makes you feel attachment to the emotions that Angeline has. You begin to feel her pains and her joys. You want her to succeed and overcome her struggles. You become her biggest fan. I really enjoyed this book and the author did a very good job at pulling her reader into the story. I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone. It's especially good if you like a "clean" book. In this day and age there is so much bad language and other unecessary things in "adult" books. It is often hard to find a novel that is clean but still on a higher reading level. This book has a wonderful plot and and excellent love story but without the filth of today's society.
