The Brand Makes the Man

D.B. Newton, another of the western writers who lived in the Great Northwest like Giff Chesire, and Wayne D. Overholser, and Ernest Haycox who could spin a yarn with the best of them. And the six short stories or novellas in this book do not disappoint as they are some of his finest work out of a collection of 70 plus novels and dozens upon dozens of shorter works. Newton is known for his characterization and his real life conflicts which lead to adventure like no other writer, with perhaps the exception of Ernest Haycox. These stories do not disappoint. Take for example the title story: Bud Jenkins discovers a dead body and is quickly befriended by the dead man's partner, but Bud will soon learn life is never easy or as uncomplicated as it sometimes seems. Whether writing as D.B. Newton or as Dwight Bennett, Newton never lets the reader down with his tales of adventure and intrigue.
