A beautiful veiw from a forgotten time in African American entertainment history

This book is a replacement for one I lost when I moved. It starts with views of how the African came to this country with all the pain and sorrow of the packed slave ships. Yet going from the slave ships to the entertainment stage is seamless in this well spun biography of a multitude of African American entertainers. The synopsis can be misleading; it states the story telling ends with modern times but one has to remember the book was printed in the late 50's with it's 3rd revision in the 60's and that is where it ends. None the less it is a beautiful account in black and white glorious pictures of black vaudville, the Harlem Renaissance all the way up to and including stars like Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte and Diana Ross and the Supremes to name a few. The pain and struggle of the stars in this book helped pave the way for Denzel Washington, Oprah and all the ground breaking African American stars stars of today.
