Book Overview

The Apocrypha, meaning "hidden things," is a collection of books included in the Greek Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Bible (with some later additions) and in the Latin Vulgate translation. While these books are not part of the Hebrew text that forms the canon for Judaism and Protestant Christianity, they are, nevertheless, regarded as canonical by several Christian traditions. Increasingly, scholars have pronounced the Apocrypha to be of great value for understanding the place of Judaism in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Consisting of such literary genres as wisdom, historical fiction, histories, devotional writings, letters, and even apocalypse, the Apocrypha is a valuable tool for those wishing to comprehend the times between the Old and New Testaments.

Included are 1 Esdras; 1 & 2 Maccabees; Tobit; Judith; Esther (Greek); Song of the Three Young Men; Susanna; Bel and the Dragon; Wisdom of Solomon; Wisdom of Jesus, Son of Sirach (Ecclesiasticus); Baruch; Letter of Jeremiah; Prayer of Manasseh; and 2 Esdras.

The Apocrypha is used by the Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Methodist, and Roman Catholic traditions.

This affordable, slim volume is a convenient supplement to Bibles that don't include the apocryphal texts; and is ideal for classroom use or personal study. It also includes an essay from John R. Kohlenberger III on the importance of the Apocrypha.

Disappointed

I was disappointed, because it is incomplete. It is missing 151 Psalms, Addition to Daniel and 2&3 Maccabees.

This is a must have!!!!

It is a shame that the Apocrypha was removed from the KJV Bible. These books speak directly to your heart(mind), and is filled with so much wisdom and knowledge of why we go through the things we do and the joy that is coming to those who wait on Yahawah. If you are seeking understanding, knowledge, and the wisdom of TMH you will not be disappointed. You will be humbled and comforted.

Good but a bit too wordy

There is a lot of great information in this book. Although, it does drone on a bit. I have found "Lost Scriptures" to be a better read.

Apocrypha

This book is very educational in nature an helps to fill in some of the gaps in studying some of the books not included in the Bible.

Apocrypha A-Go-Go

I've passed up this little red book on a number of occasions in favor of the NRSV Cambridge Annotated Study Apocrypha but I'm glad that I finally purchased a copy of this KJV translation. A straight forward, bare-bones text, that gets right to the scriptures of the Apocrypha without a whole bunch of hoopla and boring translator notes that take up space and deplete my wallet. This version contains the seven books of the Catholic Canon: Tobit, Judith (what a woman), 1 and 2 Maccabees, Baruch, Wisdom and Sirach, as well as the additions to Esther and Daniel. It also contains 1 and 2 Esdras and The Prayer of Mannessah from the Orthodox Canon as well. I recommend this version highly as it is untainted with liberal word games like the NRSV version. Enjoy and be "manful" (read chapter 14 of 2 Maccabees if that went over your head).

A useful addition

We just purchased and donated this text to our parish library. This is a very basic, and affordable, copy of these books -- just the text itself really, and there are no additional scholarly comments that one might find with other copies of these texts. They are, however, very much a part of the original King James Version, and for persons who copies of the KJV lack these books, this nice little volume will restore these sacred texts right away. The KJV of 1611 did not include 3 & 4 Maccabees, nor Psalm 151, and this volume reflects that deficit, but these other texts of the LXX can be had from other sources. Of course, like the rest of the KJV, the language used in the translation is truly gorgeous.

Clarification

This is for those of you who may think that the Bible is complete, It is not, which is pointed out in the Bible in the Bible Dictionary under the topic of the Lost Books. "...The forgoing items attest to the fact that our present Bible does not contain all of the word of the Lord that he gave to his people in former times, and remind us that the Bible, in its present form is rather incomplete." As far as these books included in the Apocrypha are concerned, they are to be taken with a grain of salt so to speak. My reason for saying this is that as a Latter Day Saint (Mormon), I have revelation from a modern day prophet found in Doctrine and Covenants Section 91 that states the Apocrypha is mostly translated correctly, but contains many interpolations by the hands of men that are not true. However it benefits those enlightened by the Spirit. Yes the book is good and should be read by any who are curious and those who are ready to know.
