The only thing to say about bradley hathaway is he is wonderful. I first heard him perform at a mewithoutYou show in Kansas and have since seen him twice at cornerstone and once more at the same venue in Kansas. I don't know how to describe him, his poetry is filled with humour and yet is still insightful. Even if you don't enjoy reading buy this book, it comes with a CD especially for all of you sadly illiterate type people.

Bradley cannot be stopped. This book was everything I expected and more. 100% recommendation to buy. And go see him live if you have the opportunity.
Thoughts from a college student...

I found the same conviction after reading these poems that I felt after reading Keith Green's biography. I found the commentaries after the poems extremely helpful in understanding where the artist was coming from. The poems are raw and to the point, and I like that.
Inspirations

So my brother comes home with this book and a new cd last night. Apparently this band from Michigan had to be listened to, and everyone should love them...well it's good music, but just not my style, but really well composed. Other than that, it's midnight thirty, and I just want to sleep, he tells me nothing about the book, so I just leave it be. Well it's Sunday the morning after, and I'm up for church, and the book is still there on the table, right where he left it. Why didn't he take it? Well I'll never know, but I'm glad I picked it up. The book is called "All the Hits so Far, but don't expect too much" by Bradley Hathaway. You see, Bradley is a poet, hence the first half of this blog that was just a mere cheap imitation. The book was published in the last month, and he's only 23. I had only read one poem before church (rightly named "Manly Man.") and I was already thinking that this was definitely worth a look. So by the time I was gone from church I had read another poem, along with the introductions and acknowledgments, and I finished the rest in less than an hour. "Why is this so interesting?" you're asking (I know you are.) Well let me tell you (unless you don't want to know, but again, it's well worth a look.) Well you may be thinking "Matt's an artist, he appreciates all type of art, so this isn't that big a deal." and that may be why I like this guy. but the truth is, I don't like him just because he writes good poetry, it's what he's doing with his poetry that has got me so intrigued. Bradley didn't just publish a book at 23 (though that's quite an accomplishment) but he's only been writing for about 2 years. For those 2 years though, he's also been traveling the U.S. Opening for bands such as Blindside and reading his poems in front of 10,000 people at a time (more or less.) He speaks to a generation that really needs his words. He's using a gift that God has given him, and telling teenagers about God's love and joy. Why is this so amazing though? because he can relate. Not to everyone mind you. but those teens who call themselves hardcore and do the local concert scene every other weekend, this book might be for you. His poetry covers topics from "the annoying hardcore kid" to just wanting a bear hug from Jesus himself. (Ok, I know those are weird subjects to fit in between, but bear with me.) I agree with one of the quotes, where this book is for those kids that just stand in the back with their arms crossed (you know who you are.) He talks about himself, how he was that kid with long hair and no pecks and called faggot by the other guys. How he can still be a "Manly Man" because he still "leaves the seat up." He may be skinny, but he still has his dreams. He talks about that girl who broke the relationship off but didn't have much to say about it. And mostly he talks about the love of God, and covers it on many different levels. The best thing about this book, is that along with the poems,
Bradley Hathaway: The Poet

If you listen to hardcore music and you think the nuances of the scene are funny or you are willing to laugh at "Your Scene", Bradley brings the laughter. If you think it's ridiculous when guys act all macho, and they feel as if they have to behave in a certain manner to be considered a real man, well, Bradley also thinks that it's funny. Bradley is an open and honest guy who is exploring his poetry through you the listener or reader. In the book, he explains the situation or scenario in how he came to the thoughts of his poems, but at the same time, he doesn't break them down in an elementary connect the dots manner. Bradley occasionally uses alliteration, hyperbole, and metaphors, but he is by his own admittance not a seasoned poet who has toiled for years behind a notebook just waiting to burst out his thoughts onto ink and paper. He is a dude who wants to be heard. If you see him live, he will capture your attention along with everyone else's in the room by any means necessary. If you read the book, you will be compelled to read more. The accompanying cd with the illustrated poetry book is really more defining than the book in my opinion. You hear his voice bursting with excitement, energy, and honesty. The instrumental music that accompanies him is so perfect for his poems. The music itself is worth the price of the book. If you are looking for a fresh face in the stale Christian book industry. Look towards Bradley Hathaway! Look Towards the Future!! Buy the Book/CD!!!
