Accidental Mosaic: A Novel about Diversity and Camaraderie

A middle-aged police officer for the Toronto Police Department is found dead, an apparent suicide in a condominium in the waterfront district of Toronto, Canada. He has seemingly overdosed on sleeping pills and whisky. The man in question is Billy Grey, a strong-willed, straight-talking but honest cop. It's February 28th, 2010, and Billy is 46 years old. He had been watching the 2010 Olympic Finals, held in Vancouver, Canada, in which Canada eventually defeats Team USA in sudden death overtime for the Gold Medal.Four of Billy's childhood friends, Harry, Nesta, Izzy and Ken converge from various places to attend his funeral. They all grew up in the suburban community of Flemingdon Park, in the city of Toronto, Canada. Toronto is currently the most multicultural city in the world, and Flemingdon Park is the most multicultural community in Toronto. The boys all happen to be of different cultural backgrounds. Harry, immigrated to Toronto as a child from Cambodia, Nesta from Jamaica, Izzy from Bangladesh. Ken is Japanese-Canadian and Billy, the leader, is a Canadian of Irish heritage. In his suicide note, Billy asks that his best friends get together on a stunning, isolated family island in the Thousand Island region, east of Toronto. Billy, who inherited "Grey Island" from his grandfather, promised to be present in spirit when they get together at midnight on July 1st, Billy's birthday and coincidentally, Canada Day.The four embark on a journey by car that explores their relationship, their multicultural past, their experiences in their adult lives, and how they had changed after leaving the cocoon of their childhood community.Flemingdon Park was, in the 1970s, a blueprint for modern Canada, and the boys grew up without prejudice in an era where there was still plenty of it.
